วันแรก เริ่มพิธีตอนเช้า 04.00-05.00 น. คณะแสนหรือข้าทาสบริวารของเจ้าพ่อกวนจะนำอุปกรณ์ มีด ดาบ หอก ฉัตร พานดอกไม้ ธูปเทียน ขันห้าขันแปด(พานดอกไม้ 5 คู่ หรือ 8 คู่) ถือเดินนำขบวนไปที่ริมแม่น้ำหมัน เพื่อนิมนต์พระอุปคุตต์ พระผู้มีฤทธานุภาพมาก และมักเนรมิตกายอยู่ในมหาสมุทร เพื่อป้องกันภัยอันตราย และให้เกิดความสุขสวัสดี เมื่อถึงแล้วผู้อันเชิญต้องกล่าวพระคาถาและให้อีกคนลงไปในน้ำ งมก้อนหินใต้น้ำขึ้นมา ถามว่า “ใช่พระอุปคุตต์หรือไม่” ผู้ที่ยืนอยู่บนฝั่งตอบว่า “ไม่ใช่” พอก้อนหินก้อนที่ 3 ให้ตอบว่า “ใช่ นั่นแหละพระอุปคุตต์ที่แท้จริง” เมื่อได้พระอุปคุตต์มาแล้ว ก็นำใส่พาน แล้วนำขบวนกลับที่หอพระอุปคุตต์ ทำการทักขิณาวัฏ 3 รอบ มีการยิงปืนและจุดประทัด ซึ่งช่วงเวลานั้นบรรดาผีตาโขนที่นอนหลับหรืออยู่ตามที่ต่างๆก็จะมาร่วมขบวนด้วยความยินดีปรีดา เต้นรำ เข้าจังหวะกับเสียงหมากกระแร่ง ซึ่งเป็นกระดิ่งผูกคอวัวหรือกระดิ่งให้ดังเสียงดัง
วันที่สอง เป็นพิธีแห่พระเวส ในขบวนประกอบด้วย พระพุทธรูป 1 องค์ พระสงฆ์ 4 รูป นั่งบนแคร่หามตามด้วย เจ้าพ่อกวน นั่งอยู่บนกระบอกบั้งไฟ ท้ายขบวนเป็นเจ้าแม่นางเทียม กับบริวาร ชาวบ้าน และเหล่าผีตาโขน เดินตามเสด็จไปรอบเมือง ก่อนตะวันตกดิน สำหรับคนที่เล่นเป็นผีตาโขนใหญ่ ต้องถอดเครื่องแต่งกายผีตาโขนใหญ่ออกให้หมดและนำไปทิ้งในแม่น้ำหมัน ห้ามนำเข้าบ้าน เป็นการทิ้งความทุกข์ยากและสิ่งเลวร้ายไป รอจนปีหน้าฟ้าใหม่แล้วค่อยทำเล่นกันใหม่
วันที่สาม เป็นการรวมเอางานบุญประเพณีประจำเดือนต่างๆของปีมารวมกันจัดในงานบุญหลวง ประชาชนจะมานั่งฟังเทศน์มหาชาติ 13 กัณฑ์ ที่วัดโพนชัย เพื่อเป็นการสร้างกุศลและเป็นมงคลแก่ชีวิต
งานประเพณีบุญหลวงและการละเล่นผีตาโขน ถือเป็นงานที่แสดงออกถึงศิลปวัฒนธรรมพื้นบ้านอันดีงามที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ของอำเภอด่านซ้าย จังหวัดเลย
